A bad fall, stroke, dementia diagnosis, or other unexpected illness are things beyond one's control that could create a need for nursing home care or another type of necessary care, such as in-home — either temporarily or for the long term. But are you prepared for the financial ramifications of required long-term care, either for yourself or a loved one?

In the Second Half of Life Podcast episode 47, Attorney Jenna Franks and Long-Term Care Planner Kristin Daugherty discuss legal strategies that are available to everyone to help minimize the financial and emotional impact of a healthcare crisis. Among the topics they discuss are what long-term care insurance covers, what both Medicaid and Medicare pay towards the cost of long-term care, how you can protect your home and other assets from the rising cost of long-term (hint: it's best to start planning early while you're still in good health in order to get the best results), and what you can do if you're currently in a crisis or a loved one is already in a nursing home and you haven't pre-planned.

Attorney Julie Steinbacher, CELA®, the founding shareholder of the elder care and special needs law firm of Steinbacher, Goodall & Yurchak, recently completed her LLM degree in elder law and estate planning from the Western New England School of Law.

An LLM is a Master of Law degree, and a graduate qualification in the field of law. It was created for attorneys to further expand their knowledge or study a specialized area of law, and is generally a one-year program if studying full-time. The elder law and estate planning LLM from Western New England is the only live, interactive and online program of its kind in the United States.

Julie becomes the second attorney at the firm to add an LLM degree to her resume. Attorney Amos Goodall also has an LLM in elder law. The LLM is also just the latest item to be added to her resume. Earlier this year, she was named a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), a national organization of more than 2,500 attorneys and law professors, becoming one of just 96 ACTEC fellows in Pennsylvania, and two of only five from the northeast and north central portion of the state ranging from the Poconos and west through State College (Amos is one of the others).

When you're doing your estate planning, chances are your qualified retirement accounts such as IRAs and 401(k)s and taxes are big considerations as far as how you structure your estate plan. Depending on your situation and goals, a trust may be appropriate for you. Taxes, qualified retirement accounts and trusts are the emphasis of the Second Half of Life Podcast episode 46, as the founding shareholder of Steinbacher, Goodall & Yurchak, Julie Steinbacher, discusses everything one would need to know about planning for the second half of life, with a particular emphasis on those three items. She begins the episode by talking about the foundational documents that everyone should have, such as Wills and Powers of Attorney, and goes into some more detail about the different types of POAs. In the second half of the episode, she then discusses trusts and their objectives, IRAs and other qualified retirement plans, as well as taxes and how those should factor into retirement planning and potential planning for long-term care, and estate planning.
