You can always tell when it is Medicare open enrollment season. Constant television commercials, non-stop emails and even physical mail ads coming from dozens of insurance companies all vying for your business. Promises of cheaper monthly premiums with more benefits are offered by every company, and when it comes to yourself or your loved one how do you choose? Current living arrangements and past medical history both play a major role in which insurance sign up for but making sure you understand the implications of your choice may be harder to understand.

Open enrollment is a time when Medicare eligible recipients are offered the opportunity to switch their insurance to another insurance plan, also known as a Medicare Advantage Plan. Once switched this plan will be in effect for an entire year unless a special circumstance takes place (there are multiple situations where this can occur, check out medicare.gov for more information). Changing your insurance during open enrollment may be fueled by the desire to save money, receive different discounts or benefits, or out of displeasure from your current plan. There are steps you should take, however, to ensure that the plan you have signed up for is appropriate for your needs.

Attorney Julie Steinbacher and Attorney Jenna Franks of the elder law firm of Steinbacher, Goodall & Yurchak have been named to Pennsylvania Business Central's 2022 list of Women Making a Difference. The annual list, now in its 11th year, recognizes those women in central Pennsylvania "whose intelligence, drive, determination and dedication have led to business success and community involvement."

Nominations were made by readers of PA Business Central and others in the business community within PA Business Central's coverage area. Nominations were reviewed and candidates were selected to the list by a selection committee at the St. Francis University Business Development Center.

Attorney Jenna Franks and Kristin Daugherty, Long-Term Care Planner and Certified Medicaid Planner™, earlier this month attended the 16th Annual Academy of Special Needs Planning Conference, held May 5-7, 2022, in Seattle, Wash. During the conference, Kristin and Jenna participated in several sessions on topics relating to changes in Social Security Administration rules and regulations, Medicaid updates, applicable case studies, and industry best practices to consider in an ever-evolving climate.

There were plenty of opportunities for Jenna and Kristin to network with other leading Special Needs Planning professionals from other law firms located throughout the country. Jenna and Kristin learned the latest trends and techniques within this niche area of legal planning while also hearing impactful testimonials from a variety of trusted service providers.  It was a great way for them to share critical concepts and generate new ideas in making sure our clients receive the best possible legal advice for their special needs planning.
