A total of nine representatives from the elder law firm of Steinbacher, Goodall, and Yurchak recently attended the Dementia Focused Practice (DFP) Conference held in Tempe, Ariz. The conference took place over the course of three days and consisted of workshops, seminars, and opportunities to work with professionals who specialize in all aspects of dementia care. Attending the event from SGY were Attorneys Julie Steinbacher, Jenna Franks and Landon Hodges; Long-Term Care Planners Kristin Daugherty, Alexis Wetzler and Sydney Telesky; Elder Care Navigators Briella Schall and Samantha Tompkins; as well as business financial planner and analyst Cortney Steinbacher.

At the conference, Julie presented a session in which she talked about SGY's Dementia Focused Law Firm, and also led a mastermind session with representatives from other leading DFP Law Firms throughout the country. Jenna and Kristin conducted a Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT) with attendees. This training uses sensory and physical obstacles to simulate symptoms that are commonly experienced by people diagnosed with dementia. During the training, the participants are made to wear vision impairing eyeglasses and headphones that simulate auditory impairments common with dementia. After the training concluded, the participants took a survey on how they felt during the training.

The Keynote speaker of the conference, Kerri Kasem, moved the room with her story and advocacy for dementia research. Kerri is the daughter of broadcast host Casey Kasem, a former radio host of the nationally syndicated show The American Top 40. Prior to Casey passing away from Lewy Body Dementia at the age of 82, Kerri and her siblings were blocked from visiting their father by his wife. Kerri advocated for his rights and now it is her mission to educate and spread awareness about cognition and patients’ rights.

Steinbacher, Goodall & Yurchak, an elder law firm with locations in Altoona, State College, Wilkes-Barre, Williamsport, Wyalusing and Wysox, Pa., is pleased to announce the addition of Attorney Jessica Eckrote to its staff as an associate attorney. Attorney Eckrote will be based out of the firm’s Williamsport office, and will work on the Williamsport estate planning and wealth protection & planning teams.

Jessica is a 2023 graduate of Widener Commonwealth Law School. During her time there, she was a member of the Trial Advocacy Honor Society, the Young Lawyers Division of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, Phi Alpha Delta – where she served as a vice justice for her final year in law school – and was also a Widener Student Ambassador. Jessica also completed internships while in law school for the Hon. James Gibbons of the Lackawanna County Court of Common Pleas, the York County District Attorney's Office, and the Dauphin County District Attorney's Office. In those internships, she handled a variety of duties, including assisting with legal research and drafting memos, appellate briefs, pardon letters, legal memorandums, and responses to motions. She also assisted in negotiating plea agreements, prepping and conducting preliminary hearings, revocations and summary appeals, and observed various legal proceedings. She also served as a part time law clerk at Handler, Henning & Rosenberg, a law firm based in Harrisburg, which she conducted legal research, drafted briefs, complaints, petitions, responses and internal memos.

Jessica holds a bachelor's degree in political science and history from the University of Pittsburgh, from where she graduated cum laude. She was a member of both Phi Alpha Delta and the Phi Eta Sigma honors fraternity.

Attorney Jenna Franks, a partner at the elder law firm of Steinbacher, Goodall & Yurchak, was recently named the 2023 Employee of the Year by the Chamber of Business & Industry of Centre County, as a part of its annual chamber awards program. The award was presented at the Chamber's annual Celebration & Chamber Awards event on Oct. 26.

The Employee of the Year award is given to a person who is an integral part of the team, going above and beyond to exceed expectations in the areas of customer service, community involvement, and business projects.
